What is a COB LED display?

COB stands for Chip-On-Board. Instead of mounting packaged LEDs on the surface, the bare chips are bonded directly to the board and then sealed under a layer of resin.

That one manufacturing change fixes the three things people dislike about LED walls up close. There are no gaps between packages, so the surface looks like glass rather than a grid. There are no exposed diodes, so a knock or a cleaning cloth can’t create a dead pixel. And the sealed face earns an IP65 rating against dust, which matters more in this region than anywhere else.

Choose COB if people will stand or sit within 2 metres of the wall. Boardrooms, control rooms, reception desks, luxury boutiques. Up close, SMD shows its grid and every fingerprint risk becomes a dead-pixel risk. COB stays seamless, sealed, and readable from almost any angle in the room.

Is COB worth the extra cost?

Sometimes. And sometimes it’s genuinely wasted money.

COB costs more because sealing bare chips in resin is a harder manufacturing process, and because fine pitches pack far more LEDs into every square metre. For a boardroom viewed at arm’s length, that premium buys a surface that survives years of close contact without a single dead pixel. Worth every dirham.

But for a ballroom wall viewed from 10 metres? You’d be paying for pixels nobody can see and protection nothing will touch. Does COB last longer than SMD?

In clean, controlled rooms, both technologies run for years. The lifespan gap appears where real life does.

SMD’s exposed packages can be damaged by impact, aggressive cleaning, or dust working into the board. Any single knock can kill a pixel, though the fix is quick because modules swap out in minutes. COB’s resin seal removes those failure modes almost entirely, which is why we spec it for high-traffic and dusty environments.
